A dog’s yawn is not quite the same as a human’s yawn.
In fact, it’s not even close. When we humans yawn, we are generally trying to stretch out and relax our bodies after being in a state of tension. Dogs have different reasons for yawning, depending on the situation.
Dogs can yawn out of boredom or stress. If you think about it, this makes sense—a human who is bored will find ways to entertain themselves, but a dog may not have that same ability; they just want something else to do! If a dog is feeling stressed out or unsure of their surroundings, they may also find comfort in yawning.
Dogs also use yawning as a form of communication with other dogs and even people! For example, if your dog sees another person yawning and then looks at you, that could mean "I want to play!" or "Let's go on a walk!" On the flip side, if your dog sees another dog yawning while looking at him/her directly… well then you might have something else going on there!
